Original watercolors and limited edition prints of local songbirds, waterfowl, raptors and small mammals; also big game and pet portraits and note cards.

I began painting 35 years ago while still working as an environmental engineer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. My late wife, Marilyn, who was a full-time artist taught me the basic techniques of design and color. From that point on, it was a matter of practice until I produced the first acceptable image. Since I retired, my painting has become a fulltime business.

I tried several different mediums including pen and ink, scratchboard, pastels, and acrylics. However, I settled on watercolors even though it is an "unforgiving" medium (no corrections allowed) because it gives me the softness of feathers and fur that I was looking for.

My subject matter consists of local songbirds, waterfowl, butterflies, small mammals and big game. It also includes pet portraits such as dogs, cats, exotic birds, horses, and in one case, a black angus cow.

I use my own photographs taken over the years for reference material. Each of my compositions start with a precise drawing which is subsequently transferred to watercolor paper. I use Grumbacher watercolor paints and Arches 140 lb. cold pressed watercolor paper. I do my own matting and framing using acid free materials.

Most of my paintings are vignettes which emphasize the subject and limit the background. My objective is to make my paintings realistic, but not photographic and to convey the beauty of nature.
